My word for 2013

You Give Me The Chills by Laine Apine
You Give Me The Chills, originally uploaded by Laine Apine

A few weeks ago I updated Facebook with this: My church is a wooden chair where I sit enveloped in sunlight and warmth, the choir is birdsongs and chimes. When I feel my heart soften, I know to listen close. This morning has been filled with listening.

Which leads me to the word I want to begin 2013 with: Soften.

For me, soften means practicing compassion and empathy, inviting ease into the moment. It means breathing slower and living deeper. It means surrendering and opening.

When fear and anxiety have me in their grips, soften.
When I’m angry and mad and frustrated, soften.
When I have no idea what the hell is going to happen next, soften.
When I’m crying and crying, soften.
When I’m hurt, soften.
When I feel joy so deep in my bones, soften.
When the kitten is so cute I can’t stand it, soften.
When laughter fills me up, soften.
When it’s quiet and the chimes are singing, soften.
When love flows from me, soften.

Do you have a word for the year? I’d love to hear what it is!

Lovely, lovely words. Just reading them softens me.
I choose compassion, for me and all others. I practice that daily. Finding compassion for myself is proving to be so much harder than for others, but I know that practice, affirmations, softening and love will make me able to see the perfectness in me as in others :-)
